I walked 75 miles this week. My legs hurt, but my spirit soars. There’s something about walking all day through beautiful countryside that sends my mind and heart in a healthy direction. A series of ancient paths traveled on foot by Christian pilgrims for 1,200 years make up The Camino de Santiago. It’s a thin place in this world, a location where it is somehow easier to gain a sense of the eternal.
The prophet Jeremiah repeated these words from God about which trails to walk: Thus says the Lord: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.
Where is the good way that I may walk upon it? That question begs for an answer. Fortunately, good ways exist all around me. On a trail in Spain, as well as in the friendships I enjoy with fellow believers. The Holy Scriptures provide a good way, one starkly different from the dead ends promoted by modern philosophies and social media chatter.
Don’t be afraid. Ask the Lord about the ancient path, then bravely turn in the direction He nods. Notice that the journey, not the destination, provides rest for your soul. Walk on, keep the faith, and enjoy roaming with the Lord.
